Good Stuff: Turmeric

I love finding new and natural ways of pampering myself.  Before my grandmother passed away she gave me a book about herbal remedies.  I was flipping through it the other day and turmeric caught my eye.  I already had some turmeric capsules in my vitamin and supplement cocktail that I take every morning  so apparently I felt it was something worth putting into my body.

I’m not going to go through all of the benefits of turmeric, but if you would like to know more you may start here.  I decided in addition to taking it internally, I could also make a facial mask.  As I have mentioned in a previous post, I became caught up in the stress of life and started neglecting myself and my health suffered.  I got very sick and I had a small acne breakout.  As turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory, I thought it would be a great way to soothe my irritated skin.  The face mask is very simple and I loved it.

Mix the lemon juice and turmeric to make a paste.  Cover your entire face with the paste, let it dry, and then rinse.  You may want to use gloves when applying the paste to your face because the turmeric will stain your nails and hands (and anything else it comes in contact with so be careful).  It will also leave your skin with a slight yellow tint as well.  As I have darker skin it was not very noticeable and I actually found it quite flattering.  It gave my skin a very healthy glow, but it soon wore away. My skin is very oily and the yellow color was easily wiped off.  If you have lighter skin, I would recommend this treatment at night.  You may also want to protect your hairline if you have lighter hair.  I have a large gray streak in the middle of my hairline so I was careful not to get the face mask on it.  You could protect your hairline with a little olive oil.

After I used this mask my skin was unbelievably soft.  I only rinsed with water.  I didn’t follow up with a moisturizer and my skin didn’t feel tight and dry.  It was so soft I kept touching it.  I can honestly say that I have never used any beauty product that made my skin feel this great.
